Safety and quality

Our LEGO® DUPLO® bricks are safe because they are big. This means there’s no risk of teething toddlers swallowing them. And while we don’t recommend that they taste our bricks, there’s no risk of exposure to harmful substances if they do.

When making our DUPLO bricks, we only use raw materials that meet our very strict safety standards. Furthermore, we always have full control over our production and continuously monitor scientific research to make any further improvements.

As with all LEGO products, LEGO DUPLO is committed to developing products that not only meet the highest international requirements, such as the EU Toy Safety Directive and the US Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, but often even exceed them. We have never compromised on safety and quality, and we never will.

Our history

In the mid-1960s, the bright minds in Billund had to address a problem. The problem was that one group of people couldn't play safely with LEGO® bricks. Namely: toddlers.

Our owner, Godtfred Kirk Christiansen, found this unacceptable. Besides inventing the modern LEGO brick, Godtfred also drafted our company manifesto in 1963, which specifically encouraged "enthusiasm at all ages."

So, in 1969, the world's first LEGO bricks for toddlers were introduced. They were twice the size of "normal" bricks, hence the name DUPLO® – a combination of "duplus" (Latin for "double") and LEGO.

But the 2:1 ratio was also important because it meant they were compatible with the original LEGO bricks. They therefore fit into the LEGO play system, which, according to Godtfred, was the way "all the elements fit together, can be used in multiple ways, can be built together... and perfectly match bricks that will be purchased in the future."

DUPLO builders could now play together with older siblings, and their big bricks would still be useful when they graduated to smaller LEGO bricks.

That’s how we started: inviting little ones to join in and helping them along their development – ​​both in LEGO play and in life itself. While much has changed here at DUPLO over the past 50 years, one thing always remains the same.

Learning through play is more than just a catchy slogan. It's our core philosophy. It's been shaped and strengthened by fifty years of product development, plus a wealth of scientific research into the importance of fun and play in those crucial early years of a child's development.

At the age when a child’s brain is developing most rapidly, LEGO® DUPLO® playsets offer all sorts of learning opportunities through play. Take, for example, when they first learn how to connect two DUPLO bricks together. It doesn’t matter how long it took them to figure it out; that’s when they learn that with trial and error (and more trial and error), they can build whatever they set their mind to.

And as those creations get bigger, more limitless, and more extraordinary, so does their builder’s confidence. That means new possibilities open up with every new DUPLO theme they discover, every diverse character, and every mouth-watering color. It won’t take long before they get the hang of it. There’s no right or wrong way to play with LEGO DUPLO. With the confidence that comes with making, there’s just a world of possibilities. It’s the little details of LEGO DUPLO play that add up to a BIG first step in life.
