Why motorcycle enthusiasts will love the new LEGO® Technic™ Yamaha MT-10 SP

It's probably no surprise that our LEGO® designers don't shy away from any challenge. Whether they try to sets larger or more realistic, they love to keep pushing boundaries when designing a new LEGO set.

So we decided to get a new one LEGO Technic™ set based on the Yamaha MT-10 SP motorcycle, our designers wanted to break new ground here too.

After all, the Yamaha MT-10 SP is a groundbreaking motorcycle. It is the crown jewel of the MT series known for its temperament, agility and Hyper Naked design.

To pay tribute to this exceptional motorcycle, we wanted to create a set with a highly detailed engine and one of the most technically complex gearboxes we have ever built.

This was a challenge that designer Lars Thygesen, a motorcycle enthusiast who has worked for the LEGO Group for more than 30 years, was more than happy to take on.

A level of realism that requires new elements

“We knew we wanted to make a gearbox that works in the same way as a real gearbox in a motorcycle,” says Lars. "We have designed a number of new elements for this purpose."

"The gearbox has four new parts. One of these is the so-called shift drum. In addition, there is also a tensioner drum, which looks like a gear divided into eight. And finally there is a shift fork and shift ring."

Creating new elements is always very exciting, but it often comes with specific challenges, especially when you do this while designing a new set.

"Developing new elements and designing the set at the same time is a bit like building a boat while you're already sailing it," Lars jokes.

But it's not just about realism, this set is also impressively large.

The LEGO Technic Yamaha MT-10 SP set has a scale of 1:5, which means that it is the largest LEGO Technic in that area. engine is the one we ever built, along with the LEGO Technic BMW M 1000 RR.

The scale and complexity of the set make it ideal for builders who like to test themselves.

“It's quite a challenge,” Lars continues. "All the moving mechanical parts are hidden. When it's finished, the engine is completely covered and nothing can be seen from the inside."

A beautiful model of this motorcycle in the living room is pretty cool, but fans obviously also want to be able to admire the interior. That is why we started working with technology to come up with a solution.

To give builders the opportunity to view the inside of the finished model, to provide motorcycle enthusiasts and laymen with a greater understanding of the technology, and of course to have some extra fun, this set is fully compatible with the LEGO Technic AR app.

An app. Three unique modes.

“The app is part of the set,” says Ann Karring, Interactive Play Designer at the LEGO Group. "You can download it for free and then choose between different experiences."

“The app includes three modes,” said Ann. "One of those three is all about the real Yamaha motorcycle. You can ride it through a cyberpunk world. When you activate the throttle, you see the engine accelerate, see the RPM and hear the engine roar."

"The second mode goes deeper into the LEGO set. In this mode you get to see an X-ray view of the engine so you can look inside the gearbox and see how the elements work together."

All you have to do is point your camera at the model to reveal its insides. The app then shows you in real time how everything works.

"In the last mode you can place a 3D model of the Yamaha MT-10 SP in your home," Ann continues. “You can take a photo of it, see what it would look like and even swap it with the LEGO model to see it full size in the room.”

Whichever mode you prefer, the app fits in perfectly with this set and helps you learn more about the real motorcycle.
