Lost the thread? LEGO® Star Wars™ reconstructions and original scenes

Long, long ago in a universe better known as the late 1990s, the LEGO Group and Star Wars™ bumped into each other in a cantina. It was love at first sight and since then we have created more than 400 very popular LEGO® Star Wars sets together. Okay, that may not be exactly how it went, but twenty years later we are not only proud of our fun LEGO Millennium Falcon™ sets and cool designs, we also love the many creative miniature tributes to this iconic space epic .

It is simply very fascinating to see the Star Wars stories come to life with LEGO bricks. That's why so many fantastic summaries, scenarios and funny scenes from the Star Wars chronicles have been recreated with LEGO stop-motion or CGI by talented fans and us.

Why are these retrospectives and reconstructions of stones so popular? Well, maybe because LEGO minifigures are cool, iconic and also a bit cute at the same time. You heard that right, we just called LEGO Darth Vader cute.

Or the reason may be because you run into quite a few limitations when trying to animate all those angular LEGO bricks and squat little characters, so that requires quite a bit of forced creativity (forced, the Force, get it?). When someone reworks a familiar story using restrictive means, it's extremely fascinating, funny, and cool. Perfect for those fun and warm parodies of LEGO Star Wars content we love so much. Grant Freckelton, production designer of THE LEGO MOVIE™, talked about exactly that when he told us why they chose a stop-motion film. “When you work with characters who have limitations, you have to look for ways to do things differently.”

Anyway, we don't want to constantly talk about our own content. That would be rather immodest. That's why we asked LEGO Star Wars veteran Jake Blais – what a heroic name that is –, creative specialist at the LEGO Agency and producer of many of our LEGO Star Wars animations, to share with us his personal favorites from our video archive.

“My favorite short films are the two-minute ones Star Wars episodes. They are told from a child's perspective and are either stop-motion films or stop-motion style computer animations. I think that's a very nice way of doing it Star Wars universe.”

“For the launch of the LEGO Star Wars We made a number of short animated films for Microfighters. I personally like Bantha Shakes the best, because the character and humorous side of that cool new product line are really highlighted in that episode.”

“On the release of Star Wars Rebels we created Rebels Ghost Story, an epic and energetic animated short film that introduces children to the captivating characters from Star Wars Rebels and the cool new spaceship The Ghost”

“On the appearance of Star Wars : The Last Jedi we made a very nice movie that was actually the opposite of animation. It was a still diorama with a snapshot from the Battle of Crait that we moved the camera through to give fans a view of a LEGO Star Wars fight they had never seen before.”

“At the premiere of Solo: a Star Wars Story we made a video about Han who had lost his co-pilot Chewie, and fans had to help find a worthy replacement. They're really fun animations that we used to imagine what could have happened if Chewie and Han had never met.”

“We've also created some fantastic longer animations. My absolute favorite, The Freemaker Adventures, is a two-season series about two brothers and a sister who meet some of the heroes of the Star Wars meet universe. You can watch the series on Disney+.”

“There are also many fan-made stop-motion films that are certainly on par with ours – perhaps even more exciting than the videos above. A recent example is The Skywalker Saga, the fantastic result of a creative collaboration between 34 animators.”

Thanks, Jake. If you haven't seen these videos yet, why are you still reading this article?
